A hollow-cathode lamp (HCL) is a discharge lamp specifically designed for use in atomic absorption (AA) instruments. It consists of a cathode made from the target element, an anode, and an inert filling gas, all sealed within a glass bulb. Excelitas offers an extremely wide range of lamps for the industrial market, covering single-element and multi-element lamps, coded and non-coded lamps, low-current and high-current lamps, as well as 37mm and 50mm models. 


A hollow-cathode lamp (HCL) is a gas-discharge lamp designed for use in atomic absorption spectrometers (AA). Inside its glass envelope are a cathode and an anode made of the element being analyzed, as well as an inert filling gas. Lamps filled with neon emit orange light, while those filled with argon emit pale violet light. 


Excelitas hollow-cathode lamp is compatible with most brands of atomic absorption spectrometers worldwide, including: PerkinElmer, Agilent, Thermo, Analytika Jena, Shimadzu, Hitachi, and GBC, among others.

HORIBA hollow-cathode lamps are available in coded and non-coded versions. For brands such as PerkinElmer, Thermo, and Agilent, we recommend using coded lamps, which enable users to automatically set parameters such as element name, current, and slit width on the workstation.
HORIBA hollow-cathode lamps are available in single-element and multi-element versions, with the latter capable of accommodating up to seven elements in a single lamp. For certain commonly used multi-element analytical methods, multi-element lamps allow direct switching between different analytes without having to replace the lamp, thereby saving time and costs associated with preheating and waiting for individual single-element lamps. Commonly used multi-element combinations include: Ca-Mg, Na-K, Au-Ag, and Fe-Mn-Zn, among others.

The Lumina coded-element lamps are high-quality hollow-cathode lamps specially designed in the 1980s by Cathodeon Spectra (now HERAEUS, Cambridge, UK) for Perkin Elmer’s AA-series atomic absorption spectrometers. These lamps are widely recognized within the industry. HERAEUS’s Lumina coded-element lamps also offer more than 70 single-element lamps as well as a variety of multi-element lamps, catering to the diverse analytical needs of users.
